Cobalt-catalyzed Heck-type reaction of alkyl halides with styrenes

A cobalt complex, CoCl2[1,6-bis(diphenylphosphino)hexane], catalyzes an alkylation reaction of styrenes in the presence of Me3SiCH2MgCl in ether to yield beta-alkylstyrenes. A variety of alkyl halides including alkyl chlorides can be employed as an alkyl source. A radical mechanism is strongly suggested for this alkylation reaction.     

Reactivity of hydroperoxide bound to a mononuclear non-heme iron site

The first isolation and spectroscopic characterization of the mononuclear hydroperoxo-iron(III) complex [Fe(H(2)bppa)(OOH)](2+) (2) and the stoichiometric oxidation of substrates by the mononuclear iron-oxo intermediate generated by its decomposition have been described. The purple species 2 obtained from reaction of [Fe(H(2)bppa)(HCOO)](ClO(4))(2) with H(2)O(2) in acetone at -50 degrees C gave characteristic UV-vis (lambda(max) = 568 nm, epsilon = 1200 M(-1) cm(-1)), ESR (g = 7.54, 5.78, and 4.25, S = (5)/(2)), and ESI mass spectra (m/z 288.5 corresponding to the ion, [Fe(bppa)(OOH)](2+)), which revealed that 2 is a high-spin mononuclear iron(III) complex with a hydroperoxide in an end-on fashion. The resonance Raman spectrum of 2 in d(6)-acetone revealed two intense bands at 621 and 830 cm(-1), which shifted to 599 and 813 cm(-1), respectively, when reacted with (18)O-labeled H(2)O(2). Reactions of the isolated (bppa)Fe(III)-OOH (2) with various substrates (single turnover oxidations) exhibited that the iron-oxo intermediate generated by decomposition of 2 is a nucleophilic species formulated as [(H(2)bppa)Fe(III)-O*].     

Optical switching and alignment of antiferroelectric liquid crystals containing an azo group

The optical properties of two kinds of photochromic antiferroelectric liquid crystal (AFLC) containing an azo group have been examined. Depending on the substituting group at the chiral centre, these AFLCs showed different photoinduced phase transitions by Ar⁺ laser light irradiation. This phase transition has led to a new form of optical switching controlled by a bias voltage. In addition, it was found that these AFLCs caused an azimuthal photoalignment effect regulated by linearly polarized Ar⁺ laser light irradiation. These phenomena were applied to image storage.     

Application of simplified desorption method to study on sorption of americium(III) on bentonite

To elucidate the sorption behavior of americium(III) on bentonite, which is a mixture of montmorillonite clay, quartz and other minerals, simplified desorption experiments were applied to the solid phases collected after the sorption experiments. The sorption–desorption behavior was examined in the final pH range from 2 to 8. The desorption experiments revealed that most of the Am was sorbed on the montmorillonite moiety of the bentonite. The sorption of Am on montmorillonite was divided into two types: one was the “exchangeable” sorption, in which the sorbed Am was desorbed with a 1 M KCl aqueous solution, and the rest was the “unexchangeable” sorption. The exchangeable sorption was ion exchange of mostly Am³⁺. The unexchangeable sorption was the strong sorption of Am hydroxides. An accessory iron mineral, pyrite, might be involved in the Am sorption on bentonite at neutral pH.     

Direct Enantioselective Three‐Component Synthesis of Optically Active Propargylamines in Water

An enantioselective three‐component reaction of aldehydes, amines, and alkynes in water by using a bis(imidazoline)–Cu^I catalysts having a hydrophobic substituent and sodium dodecyl sulfate as a surfactant was developed. The reaction was applied to a broad range of aldehydes and alkynes to give optically active propargylamines with excellent yields (up to 99 %) and enantiomeric excesses (up to 99 % ee).     

Cyclization of 1,6-enynes with allylic chromate species

[reaction: see text] Treatment of 1,6-enynes with tetramethallylchromate induces a cyclization reaction with concurrent introduction of a methallyl group. A catalytic amount of CrCl(3) combined with methallylmagnesium chloride also achieves this cyclization process. The resultant cyclic organometallic species undergo further functionalization upon reaction with electrophiles.     

Multiple reflections of Lamb waves at a delamination

Wave propagation in laminated plates with delaminations was calculated using the semi-analytical finite element method. The visualization results and deeper numerical analyses revealed the following phenomena on the fundamental Lamb modes at delamination regions of laminated plates. First, Lamb wave propagates toward the delamination, and then splits into two independent waves at the "Entrance" of the delamination with no significant reflections. These two waves reach the "Exit" of the delamination with the different phases and arrival time. Thus reflected and transmitted waves are excited at the Exit. The repetition of such reflections at the Exit causes the multiple reflections at regular intervals corresponding to the delamination size.     

Noise waveforms with repetitive phase and nonrepetitive amplitude

By use of frequency-shifted feedback lasers, noise with a stationary amplitude and a periodically stationary phase is generated. The ensemble-averaged time correlation function is periodic, whereas the power spectrum is broadband, resulting in a waveform that does not obey the Wiener-Khintchine relations. An application to multiple-access communications is discussed.
